What I think about Maturity

Lately, settling down or having children has been a trend among my batchmates in High school. A number of them tied the knot and some are having kids. I was amazed by how these people have matured in their own ways.
Looking back eight years ago, I can clearly remember how we used to hang out in the classroom while playing cards or copying assignments for the afternoon class; the scenes of having lunch under the Sampaloc tree near the gates of white building was still so vivid in my memory; so was the after school walks that became our routine as we go home .
Back then, we don’t have the same privileges as to what modernized kids are now experiencing. When I was in highschool, it was the era where computer shops boomed, social media hasn’t dominated the net and Texting was the popular mode of communication among people. We experienced worrying over petty things such as sending GM (Group messages) while we haven’t registered our load into “Unli mode” , panicking over server alarms that meant our internet time was over, and rushing over to Video City and other CD/DVD renting place just to return the tapes we borrowed.
So many things have changed in the eight years that passed; Majority have already got their bachelor’s degree, some pursued post graduate studies, a number of us worked abroad, and as I’ve said earlier, people are slowly settling down and having kids.
The thought that my peers are now already building families of their own awes me a lot, and it makes me assess myself in a way that I looked back on what I’ve been doing all this time. And by doing so, I could infer that people have their own tracks that led them to different destinations. What we do, what we believe in,our choices, as well as our experiences are the wheels that drives us to where we are now. Their wheels of fate led them to new adventures whereas some took time on different stations like mine.
Thinking of these various stations makes me appreciate long stopovers ’cause it is the reason why an individual achieves character development and this is an essential ingredient to maturity since having a character development means that you’ve gone through a lot of experiences that molded you to who you are in the present and I salute my peers who’ve already got their character development since it shows that they have conquered a lot of problems and they can finally leave and proceed to another destination.
For me, I could infer that I’m still halfway behind my colleagues when it comes to maturity, yet I can also say that I can be wrong with this because people have their own definition of it. Who knows? Maybe some people see maturity in me but I was unaware of it. After all, we can’t see ourselves in the eyes of others.
